CDT-ACM Microscope Challenge 2017

Following on from the success of last year’s challenge, first year PhD students from the CDT-ACM were asked to build working microscopes for just £100. Four teams competed to win a prize awarded by the staff and students from the CDT.  The winning microscope, designed and built by Tommaso Costantini, Roisin O’Connell, and Aasim Shaffi, used an LED light and a biconvex lens taken from a laser pen, which provided a lens with a very short focal length, to build their microscope. The final cost of the microscope was only £27.45. It was an enjoyable afternoon, and staff were impressed by the resourcefulness and skills of everyone who took part in the challenge.
