Research Project: Microscopy and microanalylsis of the passive films of reinforcing steel formed in low-carbon concretes
Supervisors: Professor Hongzhou Zhang (TCD); Professor Yun Bai (UCL);

Na graduated with an MSC degree in Chemistry from University of Limerick in 2023. During her research master, she focused on the synthesis and characterization of colloidal semiconductors (quantum dots, nanorods) for the application of Light Emitting Dodes and Laser Device. Her PhD project investigates both the microstructure and chemical composition of the passive films formed in different low-carbon concretes using TEM, SEM and Raman. The results will then be used to develop a fundamental understanding on the effect of low-carbon concrete on the passivity of reinforcing steel together with the electrochemical data.

Studying my PhD as part of the ACM CDT not only provided me with valuable training courses and workshops on characterisation techniques, but also regular academic seminars, team activities, and discussions to help expand my interests, both inside and outside of research.
